A Performance Modeling for the Proxy Caching Simulations
نویسنده
چکیده
A simulation is the popular way of comparing the performance for the proxy cache algorithms. The hit rate and the byte-hit rate can be used for the measure of the performance. However, there are several different hits and misses when we consider the cache consistency. Hence the response time and the network traffic may be better performance metrics in that case. In this paper, we propose a new modeling for the proxy cache simulations. It classifies the object retrievals into several classes, and we decompose each class into some time components. From these results, we calculate the exact performance metrics of the proxy server, like the response time and the network traffic. We show that our modeling can get much more precise results than those of the previous works.

Performance analysis of a client-side caching/prefetching system for Web traffic
Network congestion remains one of the main barriers to the continuing success of the Internet. For Web users, congestion manifests itself in unacceptably long response times. One possible remedy to the latency problem is to use caching at the client, at the proxy server, or within the Internet. However, Web documents are becoming increasingly dynamic (i.e., have short lifetimes), which limits t...
متن کاملModeling of Retrieval Latency for Proxy Cache Simulations
A latency model for proxy cache simulations is presented. It classi es the object retrievals into eight classes according to the request and the reply types, and then decomposes each class into several time components such as the connection time and the transfer time. From this modeling, we can get reasonable retrieval latencies in the simulations for various caching algorithms. Indexing terms:...

This paper uses trace-driven simulations to evaluate the performance of three different cache management techniques for multi-level Web caching hierarchies. In particular, the experiments consider heterogeneous cache replacement policies, size-based partitioning, and sharingbased partitioning across the levels of a two-level caching hierarchy. Three different synthetic Web proxy workloads are u...
متن کاملPerformance of Web Proxy Caching in Heterogeneous Bandwidth Environments
Much work on the performance of Web proxy caching has focused on high-level metrics such as hit rates, but has ignored low-level details such as cookies, aborted connections, and persistent connections between clients and proxies as well as between proxies and servers. These details have a strong impact on performance, particularly in heterogeneous bandwidth environments where network speeds be...
